The Colombian pop star Shakira was honored as the Latin Grammy Person of the Year 2011 in Las Vegas on Wednesday (9 November, 2011) where she shared her warm moment with her father and sang a song for her hometown of Barranquilla. She sang “La Tortura”, “Estoy Aqui” and “Hips Don’t Lie” at the Mandalay Bay hotel.
Shakira happily performed on the stage by pushing chairs and by standing on the tables. After each song she jumped on the stage and delighted the viewers, Venezuelan singer Franco De Vita, Mexican rocker Alejandra Guzmán and salsa legend Gilberto Santa Rosa also joined her.
Mebarak, her father who sat next to Shakira on most of the shows, took to the stage midway through the celebration and sang “Mi Nina Bonita” for his daughter.
The song, which explains to “My Pretty Girl,” is a father-daughter tribute often played at Hispanic weddings and birthday parties.
When her father Mebarak sang, pictures of the father and daughter flooded on a screen hanging along the back of the stage. Shakira, visibly moved, buried her face in a tissue thanking him in Spanish words.
Puerto Rican crooner Marc Anthony gave Shakira with a crystal plaque to score the honor. He told that she is a close friend and a humanitarian. Shakira’s Pies Descalzos Foundation has raised millions of dollars to fight poverty and educate the poor.
Shakira, who has sold more than 60 million albums of English and Spanish, is the youngest person to receive the Latin Recording Academy’s most prominent award.
She was so happy to get the award and said in Spanish that she’ll remember this night always, she said that “It’s an honor that she do not deserve, but you have made me very happy.”
In the last she sang “En Barranquilla me Quedo” lifting up her skirt showing her twisted feet’s on the stage. It was the first time the singer rotated her hips and moved on stage.
She also got another award of album of the year in Las Vegas.
Her full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll and she was of only 14 when her first album “Magia” was released. She becomes famous in 1995 at the release of “Pies Descalzo”. And become more renowned in 2001 at her single hit “Whenever, Wherever” whose 13 millions copies were sold that year.
